How the World's greatest golfer lost his game

by Cliff 26. June 2009 03:29

In 1939, Ralph Guldahl was a giant in the game of golf. A towering figure on the links, the taciturn Texan seemingly came from nowhere to win successive US Opens in 1937 and 1938, and then the Masters in 1939. But after writing Groove Your Golf, a step-by-step guide for beginners, Guldahl never won another championship. "He went from being temporarily the best player in the world, to one who couldn't play at all," said fellow PGA champion Paul Runyan. The question that has haunted golfers ever since is: did too much thinking derail one of the sport's greatest talents?    More...

Who needs the US Open

Geoff Ogilvy wins Telus World Skins Game, pockets $150,000

Geoff Ogilvy hit the jackpot on the 14th hole en route to winning the Telus World Skins Game on Tuesday.

Ogilvy pocketed C$150,000 of the $360,000 purse, while American Fred Couples finished second with four skins for $65,000.

Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., and England's Ian Poulter each walked away with two skins for $50,000 each and Spain's Sergio Garcia had three skins for $45,000.

The 18-hole event was packed into one day because of the rain delays that forced the final round of the U.S. Open to be played Monday.

Came across this today, thought it was priceless and just had to share it.

You'd never know Lucas Glover is a champ by the way he acts.

Two Down O'Connor, World's Most Avid Golf Gambler, was watching replays of Lucas Glover winning the U.S. Open and was severely disgruntled.

"Look at this!" Two Down said as he pointed at Glover, who was politely accepting the trophy on the 18th green at Bethpage Black. "I mean look how boring he is! He looks like he was just named Proctology Patient of the Year."     More...

Big names (and same names) paired together for first two days of US Open

by Cliff 14. June 2009 19:31

Laurence Donegon

Unable to contain itself, the USGA has announced the pairings for the opening two days of US Open a week in advance. For reasons unknown, it has abandoned the idea of putting the top three ranked players in the world out together - a pity, because that would have meant Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey playing against each other on Thursday and Friday.

Instead, Woods will play with Padraig Harrington and Angel Cabrera; Mickelson with Ernie Els and Retief Goosen; and Casey with his pal Geoff Ogilvy and Jim Furyk.    More...

Looks like they're getting serious

by Cliff 11. June 2009 03:24

One day after Tiger Woods visited Bethpage Black, the site of next week's U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson caused a stir when he also dropped in on the public course Tuesday.

Mickelson, who has taken a leave of absence from the Tour since announcing last month that his wife, Amy, has breast cancer, will return to competition at this week's St. Jude Championship in Memphis. He is scheduled to give a press conference there around noon Wednesday, leaving little time to tour New York's famous Black course, which was last in the spotlight as host of the 2002 U.S. Open, won by Woods. (Mickelson finished second.)

Despite around two hours of rain Tuesday morning, and a throng of fans who caught wind of the visit and began to follow Mickelson en masse, the popular left-hander looked like he was going to get in 18, according to T.R. Reinman, Mickelson's spokesman.

Mickelson was joined by his caddie, Jim (Bones) MacKay, and short-game coach Dave Pelz.
