What are your thoughts on ball fitting? We concede the advantages of club fitting, but is picking the right ball as important as some manufacturers want you to think?
Is choosing the correct make and model of golf ball really that big a deal? Will the 'right' ball really shave strokes off your score?
Anyone who's ever been fitted for a set of clubs can attest to the advantages of having the right sticks to match their swing. Their scores will generally improve and, supposedly, their backs stay healthy longer. It's really simple physics. If you bought and wore a pair of shoes that didn't fit, you'd have some problems.
But, is it equally important to pick the right ball?
We all know there are different compression balls, balls which spin more, and balls which are softer. But in the end, does it really matter which ball you chose? They all fly where you hit them.
I once had a golf pro tell me it didn't matter which ball I hit. It could have been a testament to the fact he thought I was so bad it really didn't matter.
Time and practice have made me think more seriously about this. It's difficult, but not impossible, to get a hard, two-piece ball to hook around a corner. Although any ball seems to be able to slice when you don't want it to. I've never gotten a hard ball to dance on the green, and I definitely like the feel of my putter against a softer ball on the green.
Or is it all psychology? Is it all between the ears? The fact that you had a fabulous round with a Callaway Red Big Bertha, or was it a Titleist Pro V, has convinced you that it is the ball you need for your game?
Lots of spin and a softer feel works for me, as long as it goes a long way, but for another golfer it may not be their preference.
Does it really matter when it comes to scores? I'm not sure about that one. Every ball I hit goes pretty much where 'it' wants to go.
What are your thoughts?
