Katy Jarochowicz on the 7th tee
Katy Jarochowicz, a mini-tour player from Sydney, shot 69-70 to win the Texas Women's Open by one stroke. At 1-under 139, she was the only player below par at Eastern Hills Country Club.
Jarochowicz is in no rush to return to Australia. She works at a golf shop in Sydney when not on tour. After spending 2006 and 2007 on the Australian Ladies Professional Golfers Association, she left because her conditional status limited her starts.
So she embarked on a private mercenary tour in the United States. Her four-month stint includes six state opens and four events on the Canadian Tour. She also tried qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open but missed the cut.
After missing a 4-foot putt for birdie on the first hole on Thursday, Jarochowicz made a 40-footer on No. 2.
"When I made that, I thought maybe this would be my day," she said. "I made a point of not looking at the leaderboards until I got to the 18th green. What's the point? I can't control what other people do."
Tied with Lecuyer, she took a one-shot lead on the par-3 17th, hitting 15 feet short of the hole. She made a two-putt par and then Lecuyer three-putted from about 30 feet.
On the final hole, Jarochowicz hit safely on, about 20 feet away. Lecuyer landed about 30 feet behind the pin and then missed her birdie putt from the fringe. Jarochowicz sealed the win with a 4-footer for par.
