To fit or not to fit, that is the question.
What size shoes do you wear? Do they fit? What a silly question, we make sure our shoes fit for comfort when we walk. But what about our golf clubs? Did you just buy them off the rack? Or were they hand-me-downs? So many golfers who play today will never reach their potential because of ill fitting clubs.
Let’s face it; a few golfers are gifted with excellent athleticism and hand-eye coordination. They can be playing right handed and pick up a left hand club and produce a nice straight shot that gets airborne. On the other hand, some golfers are so sensitive to length, that ½” longer than they need they end up with hitting fat shots and ½” shorter than they need results into a thin shot that never gets off the ground. Most of us fall somewhere in-between these extremes.
Clubfitting is all about a player’s strength, angles, tendencies and preferences. What may suit one person by altering shaft flex, length, grip size or a club head design feature may not have the same effect on the next person that walks through the door as we all respond uniquely to different stimuli. But a change in the lie, shaft weight, and grip size or any of the other the 15 – 20 clubfitting parameters may make a remarkable difference to your game. However, finding the right fitting for you is the challenge.
Firstly, have realistic goals of what clubfitting can do. You are not going to add 30 yards to your drives or reduce your score by 10 strokes unless you are playing clubs that are entirely wrong for you. Improvements will be made, but more in baby steps, dropping a few strokes at a time. While that may not sound like much, it may be the difference between scoring 100 and scoring in the 90s on a consistent basis
Broadly there are two approaches to club fitting; Static and Dynamic. With a ‘static’ fitting it can be done remotely with a Custom Fitting service similar to that offered by Golf Clubs Down Under.
The principle behind ‘static’ fitting discounts swing errors that the player may have at the moment and seeks to help the player re-structure his/her swing toward what is considered the ‘ideal’ swing with the flow on benefits of a better ball strike, greater accuracy and better control.
You answer a series of questions about your person and about your game and the answers are analyzed by an experienced fitter who then offers his recommendations. The player and the fitter never actually meet but if the player has accurately answered the questions a good fitting can be achieved.
‘Dynamic’ club fitting is conducted in person under the watchful eyes of a trained club fitter. The fitter will start with what you have and, using video; hitting board; swing analysis computer software and personal observation based on experience, be able to fit clubs to your stature and to your swing.
With ‘dynamic’ fitting there is need to choose your fitter carefully. A good dynamic club fitter will set you up to improve your game and help you to play better golf. A less skilled fitter tends to further embed the swing errors you have – maybe you will shave a few strokes off but you’ll never achieve your potential.
Static or Dynamic, your enjoyment and satisfaction in the game will be enhanced when you play with clubs properly fitted to your person and to your game..
